Fetal Alcohol Syndrome FAS: Symptoms, Causes & Treatment

A physical exam of the baby may show a heart murmur or other heart problems. A common defect is a hole in the wall that separates the right and left lower chambers of the heart. Know what to expect if your child does not take the medicine or have the test or procedure. There is no cure for FASD. But getting help early can help improve a child’s behavior.

The developing fetal nervous system appears particularly sensitive to ethanol toxicity. The latter interferes with proliferation, differentiation, neuronal migration, axonic outgrowth, integration, and fine-tuning of the synaptic network. In short, all major processes in the developing central nervous system appear compromised.

  • It is estimated that as many as three babies in 1,000 will have FAS.
  • Receiving treatment as soon as possible in childhood can help decrease the likelihood of developing these secondary effects in life.
  • ] effort to standardize assessment of functional CNS damage has been suggested by an experienced FASD diagnostic team in Minnesota.

Empathic, compassionate support of abstinence during pregnancy may improve opportunities for treatment of substance use disorders22,47,196,202. Screening for alcohol and substance use should be repeated throughout pregnancy and equally across populations to avoid stigmatizing marginalized populations with selective screening22,196,210,211. People who screen positive should be directed to a well-developed management pathway for clinical care. Diagnosis of FASD requires assessment of PAE, neurodevelopmental function and physical features, including facial features (Fig.6). Timely, accurate diagnosis of FASD is crucial to enable early intervention and improve outcomes161, but there is no diagnostic test, biomarker or specific neurodevelopmental phenotype for FASD.

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

The baby can’t process alcohol as well as the parent can. Drinking a lot of alcohol in pregnancy can sometimes cause mental and physical problems in the baby. This is called foetal alcohol syndrome . A child is diagnosed with an FASD by looking carefully at certain physical characteristics, growth patterns, and learning strengths and weaknesses. Interviews or records are reviewed to determine whether the child may have been exposed to alcohol during pregnancy. FAS is an irreversible congenital disorder that can only be prevented by decreasing alcohol intake during the whole pregnancy.
